In the most recent post from macnn, ATT seems to be the one who has created some of the issues with the 3G.

the network is having a really tough time keeping the network running smoothly and quickly. hopefully this will be less of a finger-pointing thing and more of a “lets fix this quick”…

thoughts? info?

In an effort to have people have the best experience possible, ATT has started sending text messages (via TUAW.com) to iPhone users to encourage them to update their phones to 2.0.2 (vis iTunes) to get the best possible 3G use.

Many have reported that following this update they are seeing fewer “no signal” or flipping between EDGE and 3G on their phone. Check out this article from NYTimes.

I’m still using the 1gen (EDGE) version but personally i have had a few strange network issues (which have been resolved by manually rebooting the iPhone).

As always, Apple is diligent about their software updates and if they have one for a system you are using/running - i would highly recommend downloading and installing.

This is the beginning of a unique relationship with Apple and ATT since the iPhone is a huge draw and demand but has been creating some bad press for Apple (which is almost unheard of). That being said - the question also arises - is it an Apple (hardware or software) issue, or ATT (network) problem.

I’m guessing it is a combo of all three. I believe Apple will continue to tweak the phone’s software through the fall and by the holidays have a solid phone… Thoughts?

starbucks and att wifi

August 13th, 2008

so here i am at a starbucks trying to get some work done. i’ve signed up for the “free” two hours with my starbucks card and had success (once) with this.

first, i sit down and open my macbook and find a slew of wireless hotspots (tmobile, attwifi to name a few). now do i connect to tmobile or attwifi?

if i connect to either i’m presented with a tmobile login page (that gives me an attwifi login option). i fill in the login and password and submit. 2 minutes pass and i’m redirected to an attwifi login page.

i enter my information in there, it fails and takes me to a tmobile failure page. WHAT! i’ve tried every password, login and username i can think of and i have yet to connect.

last time this worked i connected (surprise) and found out that i was connected only because my gmail started coming in… i never got a success page or connected. WHAT!
